This oral history records Professor Talke's contribution to the HDD technology, specifically in the field of tribology and head disk interface mechanics, and the establishment of a very successful Center for Magnetic Recording, now called Center for Memory Research at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Professor Frank Talke began his career at IBM San Jose where he was one of the pioneers in the development and application of science of tribology to address many mechanical and interface issues related to the HDD and tape drive technologies. At IBM and UCSD, Professor Talke developed important measurement techniques such as the laser Doppler vibrometry and grey scale interferometry methods to obtain better understanding of the head disk interface and mechanics on the nano-scale and, also worked on novel lubricants and additives used in HDD. He is also credited with advancing the technology in tape drives and conducting early pioneering work on drop-on-demand color ink-jet printing while at IBM. Professor Talke holds an endowed chair in the mechanical engineering department at USCD, and he is the former chair of the department of applied mechanics and engineering science. Professor Talke has received numerous honors and awards including the prestigious ASME Medal in 2008.
