In this May 2018 interview with David Grier, Peter Friedland discusses his early education and upbringing in Allentown, Pennsylvania. After earning an electrical engineering degree from Princeton University, Friedland went on to earn a PhD from Stanford University, where he participated in the CONGEN Program and MOLGEN Project. Friedland then spent nearly 10 years working as a postdoctoral researcher at Stanford. During this time, he was one of the co-founders of the early AI and expert systems companies Intelligenetics, IntelliCorp and Teknowledge. In 1987, Friedland joined NASA, where he oversaw the NASA R&D and applied research divisions for eight years. The discussion of his tenure at NASA includes descriptions of several notable advances in AI and expert systems applications, including autonomous robotics systems, unsupervised data classification, PI-in-a-Box, and expert scheduling systems. The remainder of his career includes co-founding the knowledge management company Intraspect, a second stint at NASA, and a short period at FX Palo Alto. Lastly, Friedland describes his work as a consultant for the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, where he continues to advance applied defense research projects and initiatives.
