After earning a bachelor’s degree from Oregon State University, McCune went on to earn a PhD from Stanford University and work in Stanford’s AI Lab with Ed Feigenbaum, John McCarthy, and other pioneers in AI and expert systems. In the early 1980s, he was one of the cofounders of Advanced Decision Systems (ADS), which later spun off Verity, a knowledge engineering company eventually acquired by Hewlett-Packard. The remainder of his career includes cofounding the company Cyladian, where he continued consulting work and applied research projects with DARPA.
