Description
In the second part of his oral history, Page discusses managing the automated NeXT factory, issues with manufacturing the NeXT Computer’s magnesium cube, managing NeXT’s relationship with its suppliers, including Motorola and Canon, the design of the second generation NeXTstation products, and the never-shipped NeXT RISC Workstation. Page left NeXT in 1992, just prior to NeXT becoming a software company and selling its hardware division to Canon, all the other co-founders besides Steve Jobs having already departed. Due to his experience managing the design of a custom Ethernet chip for the NeXT Computer, Page decided to found Sierra Research and Technology, designing 10/100 Ethernet chips and licensing the design to manufacturers around the world, including companies in Japan, Korea, and Germany. After selling Sierra to TDK in 2000, Page founded Next Sierra in 2002, specializing in OLED display chips and drivers, which was sold to Cambridge Display Technology in 2007.
