Description

Ding-Hua Hu’s career spanned the worlds of Taiwanese academia, government, industry and venture capital. In all of those roles he was instrumental in Taiwan’s rise as a global power in the semiconductor industry. He discusses the formation and growth of Industry Technology and Research Institute (ITRI) and the Electronic Research and Services organization (ERSO), today the primary laboratory doing semiconductor research under ITRI, and the contributions of many of the Taiwanese IT Pioneers. Since its formation in 1974, ERSO has developed CMOS IC fabrication technologies. These technologies were then successfully spun off as the foundations of UMC, TSMC, Taiwan Mask Corp., Vanguard International Semiconductor Corp.

As a president of Hambrecht & Quist Taiwan in the 1980s, Dr. Hu helped launch the venture-capital industry in Taiwan, fueling the boom in high tech. Eventually, he founded his own venture capital firm, Chien Kung Venture Capital Corporation.

Ding-Hua Hu served as a member of the Board of Directors in Macronix International Co., Ltd. and several other companies. He earned a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from University of Missouri, the United States.
