Description

This is the second of two oral histories covering the development and marketing of SPARC at Sun Microsystems. In this oral history, Bernie Lacroute, Steve Diamond, and Wayne Rosing describe the management decision making process that resulted in the development of SPARC, a new architecture, operating system, and development tool set which together played a fundamental role in the success of Sun over the years. They discuss the risks, tradeoffs, and positioning of the new system–including the decision to make it an open system. They go on to discuss the later SPARC developments and the role they played in helping to build this successful company.
