ITCHP (Information Technology Corporate Histories Project) report by industry sector : database management software products

The DB Management Software sector includes those companies whose principal product was a comprehensive directly accessible system which enabled users to manage their database needs and provide instructions for calls to and use of these databases. This includes retrieval and updating of information. These companies may have had a separate transaction processing or communication system, but did allow direct access to the database portion. There are two key structures that were used: the earlier structure was hierarchical while the later structures were relational. The initial significant hierarchical programs used in business and government were designed for mainframe computers. The relational database systems ran on midrange and mainframe computers.
