The seminar will initially cover the basic forms of protection available to Digital safeguard its investiments in R&D by preventing its competitors from using the results of those investments without authorization by Digital. Differences between these forms of protection and their relative stranghts and weaknesses in protecting different forms of technological advances will be discussed.

The main focus of the seminar wil cover patent protection for Digital's various forms of technology which include (1) types of inventions that are patentable, including software related inventions, (2) criteria taht determine the patentability of an invention, (3) the procedure within Digital for submitting and reviewing disclosures of potentially parentable inventions, (4) the procedure for filing an application with the United States Patent & Trademark Office, (5) the roles in this process of the inventors and their managers, the LEST Patent Engineer, Patent Librarian and Patent Review Committee.

The Seminar is intended to inform middle level management within the engineering groups, particularly LEST, of appropriate forms of intellectual property protection and related issues.

The goals of the seminar is to educate middle level management about (1) the types of inventions for which Digital should be seeking protection, (2) what needs to be done within the engineering groups to foster the increase in patent aplication filing, (3) the roles of the Patent Engineer as interface between the engineers/inventors and the Law Department (or selected outside counsel), and of the LEST Patent Review Committee in this process.
