The PDP-11 IAS System Generation Guide (DEC-11-OISGA-C-D, IAS version 2.0) aimed to provide instruction on how to generate a complete IAS (Interactive Applications System) multifunction operating system from a distribution kit and how to modify an existing system. System generation is the process of building a system tailored both to an installation's hardware configuration and its software requirements. The distribution kit was used to build an operational single-user system when then could be modified according to a particular installation's requirements. The IAS contained system generation programs that accepted user-provided definitions of the system to be built through two stages: basic system generation and timesharing executive generation.
