The collection ranges in date from 1977 to 2008, with the bulk dated between 1987 and 2003.

About a third of the papers consist of subject files and other records generated by Slater through his professional work. The conference files hold correspondence, schedules, and presentation materials. Examples of conferences represented in this portion of the collection include Hot Chip, WinHEC, Comdex, Mobile Insights, Asilomar Microcomputer Workshop, and Embedded Systems. There are also a number of files holding correspondence, manuscripts, and research pertaining to articles that Slater wrote for publications such as Computer Shopper, Electronic Engineering Times, Nikkei Electronics, PC Week, and PC Magazine. In addition, there are files with lecture notes, exams, and other course materials for classes that he taught. The files on various technology topics range from product announcements and press releases to product bugs and patents. The business files cover PhotoTablet, Inc., Fotiva, and Adobe, and include press releases, internal strategy and fundraising documents, presentation materials, and specifications. There are also some materials from his consulting company, Michael Slater & Associates, as well as two notebooks, one from 2002 and one from 1989, with handwritten notes.

The papers also hold one record carton of mixed clippings from newspapers and periodicals. These clippings are related to MDR, microprocessors, and advances in chip design. Also included in the collection is a small amount of MDR materials. Items of note include the 1987, 1988, and 1998 business plans for MDR. There are also MDR brochures, conference announcements, and other promotional materials, as well as some issues of Microprocessor Report and a draft of the 1997 MDR chip portfolio sponsors, with chips attached. Finally, there is a small amount of miscellaneous publications, including a few periodicals such as Byte and Upside, two reference books related to microprocessors, and several chip shot calendars.

The Michael Slater papers also hold audiovisual material and software. There are 45 VHS tapes, most of which are hand labeled or personally labeled, ranging in date from 1990 to 2001. They include product announcements, recordings of news segments, and conference presentations. There are also some VHS tapes related to PhotoTablet and Microprocessor Forum.
