The Michael Slater collection contains MicroDesign Resources (MDR) publications, conference material, professional files, books, manuals, reports, and audiovisual material collected by Michael Slater. The majority of the collection pertains to MDR and the microprocessor industry. The collection ranges in date from 1978 to 2004, with the bulk dated between 1988 and 2000.About half of the collection holds materials published by MDR. This includes conference proceedings and seminars from Microprocessor Forum between 1989 and 1999, Microsystems Forum between 1993 and 1997, PC Tech Forum between 1996 and 1998, and Embedded Processor Forum between 1998 and 2000. There are also die galleries published in conjunction with Microprocessor Forum. In addition to the materials specific to the conferences, there are also general Microprocessor Report seminar booklets and MDR market and industry forecasts from the late 1990s. This portion of the collection also holds bound article and patent reprints published by MDR as well as some issues of Microprocessor Report newsletter. A notable item in this area of the collection is the 1987 MicroDesign Resources, Inc. business plan.
The collection includes about one record carton of conference and symposium material from events that were put on by groups other than MDR. Examples of conferences represented in this portion of the collection include WinHEC 1994, Pen Computing 1991, Agenda from 1992, 1996, and 1998, PC Forum 1992, Platforms for Computing Forum 1991, Personal Computing Forum 1989 and 1990, and Pen Expo 1993. There is also material from a professional development course titled Microprocessor Interfacing.
Additionally, the collection holds about a record carton of work files from Slater’s work as teacher and a consultant. There are course materials for classes that he developed and taught at places like Santa Clara University as well as through his consulting business, Michael Slater Associates. There are also some consulting files from the 1980s, including a binder of material related to Phoenix Software prepared by Slater for Gryphon Engineering. There are some materials related to PhotoTablet, including a final concept report and a business plan from the early 2000s, as well as an Adobe “Jupiter preflight briefing book” from 2002.
Also included in the collection is a small amount of reports and manuals, which range in date from 1978 to 1999. For example, there are several DEC manuals from the late 1970s, as well as industry reports from the late 1990s published by Photo Marketing Association International. Additionally, there are approximately 40 reference books related to microcomputers and microprocessors.
The collection also includes a box of audiovisual material. There are 36 audiocassettes ranging in date from 1991 to 1994, most of which are recordings of conferences such as the Microsoft Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC), Microsoft Win32 Professional Developers Conference, and COMDEX (Computer Dealers’ Exhibition). There are also 19 VHS tapes, which are a mix of recorded product announcements from companies such as General Magic and Intel, as well as lectures.
