DescriptionThe Hewlett-Packard collection on the HP 3000, ranging in date from 1972 to 2005, holds manuals, course materials, specifications, data sheets, marketing materials, newsletters, and periodicals related to the HP 3000 and its operating system, hardware, peripherals, and applications.
About half of the collection is made up of manuals, many of which are from the 1980s and 1990s and cover HP 3000 system operation and management. There are also a number of manuals for various versions of the operating system MPE (Multi-Programming Executive), including MPE IV, MPE V, MPE XL, MPE/iX, as well as a 1972 MPE specifications document. In addition, there are reference, installation, and maintenance manuals for applications and updates for the HP 3000. Examples of topics covered include VPLIS/V, OpenView DTC Manager, PA-RISC architecture, IMAGE Data Base Management System, TurboIMAGE DBMS/3000, Query/3000, COBOL II/3000, PASCAL/3000, HP C, HP Systems Programming language (SPL), and various disk arrays and servers.
About a quarter of the collection is made up of HP 3000 training course materials from the 1980s and 1990s, including workbooks, reference material, notes, and quizzes. Examples of course subjects include MPE internals, MPE XL, MPE/iX, and the HP TurboIMAGE DBMS/3000.
The rest of the collection consists primarily of of marketing and promotional materials, including article reprints, data sheets, brochures, HP-authored white papers, sales guides, and presentation materials. There are also HP publications, newsletters, and customer note series, such as “HP 9000 Advantage,” ‘HP Advisor,” “The 3000 News Wire,” “HP 3000: Worry-Free, Business-Critical Computing,” and “HP 3000 Business Servers.”
Finally, there is a small amount of non-HP publications, including manuals for Symbios Logic controllers and processors from between 1995 and 1998 as well as PCI local bus specifications from 1995. There is also material from the 1988 9th annual conference of the Bay Area Regional Users Group of the HP 3000.
