John Mallinson was a British-American physicist who made crucial contribution to the understanding of magnetism and magnetic recording. In 1962, he joined Ampex Corporation where he became the director of Recording Technology Department. There Mallinson developed the theory for structures with one-sided magnetic flux. In those years he also oversaw the development of PRML (partial-response maximum-likelihood), a new readback technique for magnetic recording.

John Mallinson passed away on December 2015.
