In 1962, he joined Ampex Corporation where he became the director of Recording Technology Department. There Mallinson developed the theory for structures with one-sided magnetic flux. In those years he also oversaw the development of PRML (partial-response maximum-likelihood), a new readback technique for magnetic recording.
