The Origins of the Stanford University SUMEX-AIM Router Technology: A Historical and Technical Overview
<p class="MsoNormal"><i><span style="mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';">This technical and historical overview by computer scientist Bill Yeager documents the origins of the Stanford SUMEX-AIM Ethernet router—an early, multiprotocol Internet router developed between 1980 and 1981. Prompted by a donation from Xerox PARC, Yeager along with a team at Stanford University connected disparate campus computer systems using Ethernet and the PARC Universal Packet (PUP) protocol. Built on a DEC PDP-11/05, the router operated with a novel Network Operating System (NOS) and employed multitasking, real-time packet routing, and a non-preemptive scheduler. </span></i> </p> <p class="MsoNormal"><i><span style="mso-fareast-font-family: 'Times New Roman';">The system supported both PUP and later IP routing, making it one of the first extensible, software-driven routers. Yeager also wrote a custom Ethernet interface and memory management system to overcome technical constraints of the hardware. This work laid the foundation for Andreas Bechtolsheim’s MC68000-based Stanford Ethernet router that routed PUP, XNS, Chaosnet, and IP and directly influenced later hardware-based commercial designs.
