A secondary memory storage device- with 40 million bits per cartridge. 25K cartridges were distributed across 8 cartridge storageunits with 16 magnetic tape handlers. Access time was 15 seconds divided by 8 transfer units. The cartridge was designed to survive 2 orders of magnitude. The unit was capable- in a given time frame- of more loads and unloads than any other magnetic tape. The tape is 2.7inches wide with 100" of usable storage area.
