Qantel was founded in Hayward, California by a group of engineers that left the computer division of Singer. It specialized in providing small business computers.
The equipment, and the proprietary software that came with it, was considered quite reliable and the firm grew rapidly. Despite these successes, they held on to the specialized systems too long and changing market conditions resulted in a 1992 bankruptcy.
Qantel’s assets were purchased by an employee of a related hardware service company and today, under the name Qantel Technologies, they still specialize in small business solutions, mainly software.
