Ken Thompson, co-developer of the Belle chess computer, playing chess between games at the 1996 Deep Blue vs. Kasparov match. In 1996, Deep Blue was the first computer system to win a chess game against a reigning World Chess Champion, defeating Garry Kasparov in the first game of a six game match. Kasparov bounced back, however, defeating Deep Blue by a score of 4-2.
