Description: The PDP-1D was the machine that DEC modified for Stanford University and Bolt Baranek and Newman (BBN) for use in timesharing. Since large mainframes and minicomputers were very expensive, it was rarely possible to allow a single user exclusive access to the machine for interactive use. Timesharing programs at MIT, Stanford and BBN allowed multiple users to share a computer by using a user's idle time to service other users.
