Raytheon can trace its roots back to the American Appliance Company, founded by Vannevar Bush and others in 1922. They have been involved with computers since the late 1940s. They were subcontractors on machines such as EDVAC and even produced some very early computers of their own, e.g., the Raydac.

Although never a real force in the commercial area, Raytheon has had success with a large range of computer-related products in the military and aerospace industries. They are, for example, remembered for the construction of the Apollo Guidance computer (actually designed by a team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology) that took men to the moon and back.
