RCA had a large research laboratory as part of its corporate structure since the 1920s and is well known for innovative products. In the 1940s, under the direction of Jan Rajchman, they undertook the design and construction of the Selectron memory tube for early computers (such as the Johnniac).

Starting with the Bizmac in 1952, they were a major force in the computer industry and produced well-regarded machines, often in conjunction with other firms such as English Electric and Machines Bull in France.

They produced their Spectra 70 series to compete with the IBM System/360 but found the competition fierce. In 1971, they sold the computer division to Sperry Rand.
