From 1970 to 1994, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) hosted annual computer-to-computer chess tournaments to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas. At the 20th annual ACM Computer Chess Championship two teams--HiTech and Deep Thought--both from Carnegie Mellon University, tied for first place. Three members of the Deep Thought team were later hired by IBM to create the Deep Blue chess system.
