Chess programmer Richard Lang's Mephisto chess system was one of the strongest microprocessor-based programs from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. At the 20th Annual ACM Computer Chess Championship custom chess machine HiTech won the tournament, followed closely by Deep Thought. Microprocessor-based Mephisto came in third.
