From 1970 to 1994, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) hosted annual computer-to-computer chess tournaments to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas. Tournament organizer Monty Newborn said: “Play was often interrupted to resuscitate an ailing computer or terminal. The audience howled with laughter. For the participants, however, it was a learning experience.”
