Successful computer chess programs of the 1970s, such as Cray Blitz and Chess, ran on supercomputers that allowed them to search chess positions to a greater depth than before. Cray Blitz was originally written by Professor Robert Hyatt of the University of Southern Mississippi, and was later enhanced by Harry Nelson (shown here in front of a Cray X-MP supercomputer), a researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.
