This oral history traces the life and contributions of John Darringer, who, at the time of this interview, was the manager of System Level Design at IBM research in Yorktown Heights. John earned a BSEE in 1964, a MSEE in 1965, and a PhD in 1969 from Carnegie Mellon University. After spending a few years with Philips in Holland, John returned to the US to join IBM research, where he continues to work today. Throughout his career, John has focused mainly on problems relating to software vs. hardware. He felt software development offered the largest challenge. While at IBM he has held a wide variety of positions, developing software languages, software development tools, hardware development tools, and helping to guide IBM’s research in a number of areas.
