Description

This short video, entitled “The First Fractal Island,” reproduces the “Fractal Theory of Relief.” It is a computer animation produced by Dr. Benoit B. Mandelbrot at IBM, which he joined in 1958. The footage, which was created from 1974 to 1976, demonstrates, “The superposition of many statistically independent straight vertical faults.” The animation appears to be an island rising out of and then back into the sea, an effect created by the fractal model. Mandelbrot’s book, “The Fractal Geometry of Nature,” explains it in full detail.
