In this oral history, Admiral Henry G. Chiles, Jr. discusses his experiences with the rise of computerization in the United States Navy, as well as communication practices and presentation aids including PowerPoint. Chiles’ interview ranges from his experiences at the Naval Academy in the late 1950s to his early roles with and on nuclear-powered submarines. He discusses his service in Admiral Rickover’s headquarters and on submarines across the 1970s and early 1980s. Chiles discusses his expanding commands and the continuing rise of computing in the 1980s, including command of strategic submarines, the Atlantic submarine fleet, and NATO’s Atlantic submarine fleet. In the early 1990s, he commanded United States Strategic Command. Throughout, Chiles discusses Navy practices of communication, presentation, and use of computers.
