According to CHM curator Chris Garcia the object is an early model, possibly a prototype, of a credit card/check verification telephone. It includes a reader slot for swiping a credit card and an RS232 cable connector for a printer. The handset label identifies the handset as model RS-301, FCC # CPS8GQ- 70325-TE-R, made in Taiwan. On the underside, it is labeled with an asset property tag (no number) indicating ownership by the Security Pacific National Bank.
