Description

This manual provides information and specifications for the HP 1000 L-Series computers. The L-Series computers are designed to deliver full minicomputer power to a variety of cost-critical applications.

The L-Series computer architecture is based on a "distributed intelligence" design utilizing two custom Silicon-on-Sapphire (SOS) integrated circuit chips. The first chip is the central processor unit (CPU) chip that executes the HP 1000 instruction set. The second chip is the Input/Output (I/O) processor chip. The I/O chip executes all I/O instruction.

There is an I/O chip on every I/O card in the system. All I/O chips on all I/O cards monitor the instructions the CPU fetches and executes the I/O instruction specific to its I/O card all at the same time in parallel with the CPU. In this way the L-Series delivers direct memory access (DMA) for every I/O card in the system.
