Description

This object consists of seven pieces: The laptop computer, a removable GRiD Model 34170 power supply, a GRiDCASE Model 32300 removable expansion tray, a GRiD Model 3401 external 3 1/2-inch floppy disk drive, a 20-inch cable with DB-25-P connectors at each end, a GRiD 3 1/2-inch floppy disk labeled "GRID 386," a collection of several manuals, warranty registration cards, black plastic cards, and related materials, and a manufacturer's original box for a similar GRiD Model 1535, but marked with GRiD Tracking Number K32728, rather than the tracking number actually found on the object. Weight and dimensions are for the laptop computer with the power supply installed, the screen closed, the expansion tray attached, and the rear case-tilting stands closed. "GRiD" is molded into the top of the computer, near the rear edge. The upper left-hand corner of the screen bezel has a label reading, "GRiDCASE 1535 EXP. The upper right-hand corner of the screen bezel has a label reading, "386.". There is a hinged cover, approximately 1 1/4 x 5 3/4 inches, above the left-hand function keys, that covers two DIP 32-pin chip sockets for chips approximately 5/8 x 1 1/2 inches. No chips are installed.. The computer has a battery compartment with an internal connector card labeled: "Denny's Battery Backplane, ASSY NO. 104170-00, SERNO C049069." The backplane has four spring contacts for flat-plate terminals and two card-edge connector sockets. No battery was found with the object. Instead, the power supply was installed in the battery bay.. On the bottom of the computer, there is a recessed connector with three rows of pin sockets for 32 pins each that mates to a connector on the top of the expansion tray. There also is a 1 1/8 x 3 1/2-inch white adhesive label with a bar code and the text, "The Computer Museum History Center, Accession Number: X1315.97." This is not one of the current generation of CHM barcode labels with 1026-series numbers. The expansion tray has two fixed-clip fasteners and two toggle-and-spring clip fasteners that secure the tray to the bottom of the computer. It has two computer-card bays opening out of one end. There are printed labels reading, "XT Card" and "AT Card" on the bottom of the tray, corresponding to the two card bays. On the upper face of the tray, there is a protruding pin connector with three rows of 32 pins each that mates to a connector on the bottom of the computer. There are three grills for cooling fans on the bottom of the tray, but only two have fans and the third is blocked. No cards appear to be installed in the card bays. There is a 1 1/8 x 3 1/2-inch white adhesive label with a bar code and the text, "The Computer Museum History Center, Accession Number: X1315.97." This is not one of the current generation of CHM barcode labels with 1026-series numbers.. The power supply is approximately 1 3/8 x 2 3/4 x 6 3/8 in. It has a black metal case with two silver-colored flat-plate contacts and a recessed center-pin-and-sleeve-type connector at one end and a recessed three-pin power-input cord connector at the other end. It is labeled as Microenergy, Inc., P/N 10-0062. It is labeled with a capacity of 80 watts at the line-cord connector end but with a capacity of 16.25 VDC, 60 watts, at the low-voltage contact end. It is labeled for use "in GRiDCASE 1200, 1307, 1500, and 3403 drive." On one edge, there is a yellow adhesive label, approximately 1/2 x 1 1/4-inches, reading, "MISC 11.". The floppy disk drive has a white plastic insert in one of the sockets of its DB-25-S connector.
