Managing the Threat

Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS) CP-642/USQ-20(V)

Following Lincoln Labs’ study of SAGE’s impact, the Navy launched a project to create a fast and flexible computer system for a single ship. Seymour Cray did the initial NTDS computer design in 1957.

Managing the Threat

The advent of high-speed planes and missiles in the 1950s intensified the threat to American warships. Defending them required processing and coordinating a tidal wave of information.

The Naval Tactical Data System (NTDS) used computers to integrate and display radar, sonar and communications data. This real-time shipboard information system began operating in the early 1960s.

NTDS Combat Information Center training

Full-scale mock-ups of complete NTDS Combat Information Centers were crucial training tools. NTDS included subsystems from three major suppliers: UNIVAC computers; Collins Radio communications; and Hughes Aircraft displays.

USS King (DLG-10)

In October 1961, the Navy tested the NTDS on the USS Oriskany carrier and the USS King and USS Mahan frigates. After being successfully used for decades, NTDS was phased out in favor of the newer AEGIS system in the 1980s.
