Description
In this oral history, Tom Malloy begins by discussing his youth during the 1950s and 1960s in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. He reviews his developing interest in mathematics and science, as well as his first encounter with digital computing in 1969 during a summer high school program. Malloy reviews his experiences in the early 1970s as an undergraduate at Stanford University, and his participation in the mathematical sciences major, including computer science classes. He discusses his route to a student job at Xerox PARC through a friend’s connection to Jerry Elkind. The job was to staff the XGP printer at PARC, where he was supervised by Chuck Geschke. This post led Malloy to take up a full-time position at PARC, working as a programmer for Charles Simonyi. As part of Simonyi’s research into programming methodology, he and Malloy created the editor Bravo, working closely with Butler Lampson. The interview concludes in detailing some of the work involved in the creation of Bravo.
