Description

In this second oral history interview, Tom Malloy begins with a discussion of Bravo and its creation, including the piece-table data structure. He then discusses his experiences at Xerox PARC and its System Development Division more broadly, including the creation of BravoX. Malloy recounts his departure from Xerox at the end of the 1970s first for Zilog, and then, in 1979 to Apple. Malloy reviews his work at Apple on the Lisa project, especially his development of LisaWrite and, then, networking software. Malloy details his interactions with Steve Jobs and other key figures at Apple. He describes his decision to become an independent consultant in 1984, and his contract work with Adobe Systems in porting PostScript to the Lisa and to the IBM PC. Malloy describes his decision to join Adobe full-time in 1987 and his subsequent 26 years with the firm. At Adobe, Malloy describes his work on Illustrator, Adobe Type Manager, and Acrobat. He reviews his tenure at the lead of the Advanced Technology Group, and his thoughts about R&D management. The interview concludes with a review of Malloy’s volunteer efforts.
